Weekly Roundup

This weekend saw Roadies and XC head to Snowdonia for the annual mega trip for some epic days in the saddle. The roadies tackled the formidable Bwlch y Groes, a ridiculous wall of pain averaging 12% for almost 3km along with numerous other climbs for the day. The following day saw the roadies climbing up to the base of Snowdon in glorious sunshine and relishing the breathtaking views.
The knobby-tyre crew took on the boss level of Welsh mountain biking with a weekend of riding Coed-y-Brenin's Beast loop, as well as the classic Marin trail at Betws-y-Coed. Adrenaline and altitude were traded back and forth throughout both days, yet everyone managed to make it home with all body parts still attached. Along the way, we met a friendly trail cat who liked our energy bars, and a film crew doing some sort of dodgy medieval sci-fi scene in the middle of the woods. Wales never fails to amuse.

That wraps up our MTB trips for this term, though weekly rides will continue throughout the winter. Another fantastic UOBCC trip, many thanks to Eric for organising.

Meanwhile, in Newport (rarely a great start to a story), several of UOBCC’s track team secured accreditation on the track. The general council of British Cycling has seen it fit to allow them to race and train in all indoor UK velodromes in future. Ryan, track captain, reported: “I am very pleased with this result. Through hard work, we have achieved the first and foremost aim of my 5 year plan of world track cycling domination. Long live UOBCC!”

Super Chilled Out Race Day (3rd Dec)

Facebook Event.

Cardiff University Marmots are kindly hosting an afternoon of racing at Maindy Track. This is a great chance to come and race guys from Swansea, Cardiff and Bath in a fun and relaxed environment. The event runs from 15:00 until 18:00 on a Wednesday afternoon, so hopefully you'll be able to head on over to join in!

More details to come soon, but the afternoon will probably consist of a series of short races; a scratch race, elimination, team pursuit, sprint and maybe a small crit at the end.

Racing Roundup

UOBCC was racing all over the country this weekend! Georgie Panchaud took 1st woman (securing a bottle of port) and 13th overall at the universities championships in Durham on Saturday.

On Sunday, two riders also took to the mud in Purdown in Bristol for round 8 of the western league. With its famously brutal climb and hair-raising descent, it is one of the most challenging courses in the area. Chris Brasnett illustrated this by falling off twice during the practice, however stayed on two wheels during the race and worked his way through the field towards a solid finish.Meanwhile Cam Toms had a good start, using the very slippery climb to chase down the series leader. Halfway through, he was vying for 2nd place but a fall left him having to settle with 4th and some very wonky handlebars! Next week - more muddy fun in Warmley.

Mega Trip Sign Up (XC and Road)

The biggest weekend away of the year. This trip is for both ROAD and MTB. 45 of us will be descending upon Kings YHA hostel in Snowdonia (which we have to ourselves) for the weekend.

Roadies will be taking in the incredibly smooth tarmac, silent roads and epic terrain of the Snowdonia national park. The MTBers will be ripping up the gnarliest trails Snowdonia has to offer.

INCLUDED (heavily subsidised):
-Transport to and from Snowdonia from Bristol.
-Two nights accommodation.
-Dinner on Saturday night.
-Breakfast Saturday and Sunday morning.

Sign-up online.

Film Night, Thursday 20th November

Location: 47 Belvoir Road, BS6 5DQ
Facebook Event

This Thursday, as a precursor to the Mega-trip Snowdonia XC/Road extravaganza, we are getting everyone around to 47 Belvoir Road for the first UoBCC film night.
We have a projector, beers and a truly epic film to watch “Where the Trail Ends" is a 1.5 hours of downhill madness that makes Leigh Woods look like cake walk.

Performance & Development Squad Training

The first Performance & Development Squad Training.

Thursday, 7pm (on the Downs): There will be a number of groups running 'bikability' exercises to increase confidence and practice group riding techniques. The Performance team will also be out doing an interval session if you're looking for some pain! We'll be starting at 7pm by the water tower and then rolling down to 47 Belvoir Road for some well-earned popcorn afterwards.

What's occuring this week

No social this week, but we're planning a film night for next week, so keep an eye out. We hope to see you all at the rides this week. Here's what's on offer:

Tuesday: 8pm, spinning. (more info)

Wednesday: 2pm, social ride from the bridge. (Bring lights!)

Saturday: time tbc, performance/development squad training (more info below)

Sunday: 10am, social rides from the bridge.

The Brecons Trip Tale

"The Brecons road trip saw epic scenery, biblical rainfall, sub-zero temperatures (probably, who can be bothered to actually check), copious amounts of pasta and porridge, quality cycling chat and most importantly some glorious riding on some of the most demanding roads Wales has to offer.

After a late night of sober revelry on Friday, even the torrential rain outside couldn’t dampen spirits, and the UOBCC peloton set off as one to cruise down to the first major obstacle of the weekend, the Gospel pass, which also spawned the gospel according to Mat Mew: “If thou is 13th or faster up the gospel pass you are condemned to the fast group, and he saw it, and it was good.” All that was left for the day was the Tumble (6km of 10% with a hefty headwind at the top) and a collection of other sharp inclines. Once back all of the bikes received a mineral water hose down and a dousing of GT-85 (thanks Chris) as well as the riders receiving mineral replenishment at the local pub.

Morale was raised further by a clear blue Sunday morning, and eager legs set off towards the Devil’s elbow (More biblical references), a leg burning grind up a Cliffside giving way to some more epic Brecons scenery, and more epic Brecons rain. Some then slogged their way to Rhigos pass and beyond, a testament to the grit and quality behind UOBCC, with others making their way home a slightly more direct route over some very exposed moorland.

In spite of the challenging conditions the peloton remained upbeat, safe in the knowledge of a warm pub at the end with the added bonus of seeing Ryan getting changed in the back of a van. It was a tired but satisfied bunch that made it back to Bristol Sunday night and I hope that everyone enjoyed the trip as much as I did." (words - Fred Cook.)

Mega Trip Sign Up (XC and Road)

The biggest weekend away of the year. XC and Road combine to take on Snowdonia. Not one to be missed! If you enjoyed the Brecons trip or Afan, you'll love this!

BPW Uplift Round-Up

We had a great turnout last Sunday for the first DH trip of the year to BikePark Wales. Old and new faces alike joined for an awesome days riding in what is a very well thought out and constructed bike park. The mixture of flat out and flowy blue runs, more challenging rock-strewn reds, and full on suicidal blacks with names like ‘Enter the Dragon’ and ‘Dai hard’, meant there was something for everyone. Our numbers were also bolstered by several men of steel (lunatics) who opted to pedal up the monstrous hill on which the bike park sits. Even the characteristically Welsh drizzle steaming up our googles could not ruin our fun.

Cheers to everyone who came along, keep an eye out next term for more DH trips. In the pipeline we have another uplift day at BPW, a possible uplift at Cwmcarn, as well as a Southwestern Uni’s unofficial miniBUCS DH race with Bath, Exeter and Cardiff! Watch this space.

Wednesday - Pub (Nov 5th)

  • Where: W.G. Grace. (Whiteladies Spoons)
  • Time: 8pm
  • Facebook Event

Hope to see you all tomorrow at 8pm in the WG Grace for a casual drink! Bring you're best cycling chat. Come meet everyone before the Brecon Beacons trip away! More info on the facebook event.
